Hinterland was the collective name for Gerry Leonard and Donal Coghlan a musical partnership based in Dublin between the years 1987-1994. In 1998 Gerry released his solo project album under the name "Spooky Ghost".

Apart from playing and recording for Suzanne Vega, Gerry Leonard has been playing and/or recording for (among others): David Bowie, Dunkan Sheik, Paula Cole, Vanessa Carlton, Sophie B. Hawkins, Laurie Anderson, Brian Kennedy, Avril Lavigne, Cindy Lauper, Chris Botti, Holly Cole, Jonatha Brooke, Susan McKeown and Rufus Wainwright.

Gerry Leonard was one of the guitarists participating on the recording of "Songs In Red And Gray" (2001), joining the Suzanne Vega band that promoted it from September 2001. Gerry stayed with Suzanne Vega only until April 2002, joining David Bowie's touring band from that date onwards.

With his solo project "Spooky Ghost", Gerry Leonard opened for Suzanne in several concerts during 2003.
